Coffee has been linked to various health benefits and issues. There’s a small study which suggest your daily intake of coffee could affect your body’s metabolism in very few ways that you thought.
The study, of 47 adults, found that heavy coffee consumption — four to eight cups a day — altered blood levels of more than 100 metabolites. That refers to a broad range of chemicals that change after eating or drinking. Many of the effects were expected, researchers said, but a few were surprising.

Coffee is giving the same effect as what marijuana gives to your brain, related to the endocannabinoid system. It’s the opposite reduction of what happens when you take pot. Many students also found that consuming coffee could lower the risk of diseases like Parkinson’s, even heart disease, diabetes, certain type of cancer and multiple sclerosis.
Cornelis, an assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, told “But most of those studies are just looking at associations, they looked at people’s self-reported coffee intake and their risk of disease.”
However, the study is to get more at mechanisms rather than biology and the result was published on March 15 in the Journal of Internal Medicine which invited clinical trials, 47 Finnish adults involved because they’re habitual coffee consumers.
They were to avoid coffee for a month, then have four cups a day in the next month, then eight cups a day the following month. Then the researchers collect the blood sample at the end of the month. Resulting that coffee consumption could triggered expected changes of the body, especially in metabolism.
The team had also found something unknown. There are shifts in metabolites that’s linked to steroid system and fatty acid metabolism. Cholesterol and hormones like testosterones and estrogen are included in the steroid system. About the health? It depends on the people. It’s pretty much unknown.
Cornelis hoped that in future studies, the team could dig more information between the connection of coffee and endocannabinoid metabolites to find reasons and explanations as to why coffee could lower the risk of some diseases.
Some range of body functions was helped by endocannabinoid system. Including blood pressure, sleep, appetite and calorie burns. Some studies shown that having coffee could help weight control.
Angela Lemond said, “It’s hard to know what to make of the findings. The study was small and it set up an artificial situation where people went from no coffee to four cups a day, then jumped to eight daily.” She’s a spokesperson of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “That’s going from zero caffeine to about 400 milligrams a day, then 800, it’s not clear, whether the metabolite changes reflect what happens with people’s typical coffee-drinking habits.”
In US, adults are able to consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine in one day, it’s like the limit of what’s necessary. If they have that much coffee, they shouldn’t add sugar, cream or any syrups like vanilla, hazelnut or caramel into it.
We need to pay attention for our caffeine intake. Caffeine is not only in coffee itself, but can also be found in soda and tea. It could drive you anxious for hours and your adrenaline rushing most hours. If this continues, you’ll get lack of sleep.
