Guaranteed £7m Fund From Starbucks To Establish Coffee Cups Solutions

Starbucks guaranteed £7m fund to develop coffee cups to be recycled and composted and declared yes to the brand new bean to cup technology to boost sourcing practices.

Closed Loop Partners and its Center for the Circular Economy is in partnership. Starbucks main goal is to stop plastic paper cups of coffee to end up in the landfill and wants to give a global solution by recycling the content or make it into another cup or second cup.

Nobody is satisfied with the incremental industry progress. It doesn’t move fast. Therefore, today we’re declaring a moon shot for sustainability to work together as an industry to go all 100% recyclable and compostable cups to the market with a three-year ambition.” told Colleen Chapman, the vice president of global impact at Starbucks.

The company will launch a NextGen Cup Challenge to offer stimulation for startups, making prototypes for compostable or recyclable coffee cups. Currently, Starbucks paper cups are manufactured with 10% recyclable fibre and Starbucks is trying to raise the recyclability of their cups.

Plastic coffee cups are sealed with polyethylene or plastic lining on the interior, that’s why coffee cups are very difficult to recycle. The lining of the interior is tightly stuck to the paper. The reason behind that is prevention. It could prevent the paper going all soggy. However, polyethylene won’t ever be recycled along with the usual paper waste by the locals. Each minute, 5000 cups of coffee are discarded in United Kingdom, but less than 1% of 5000 coffee cups are recycled.

Starbucks announced that they will start the trial in selected stores in London which some have already agreed and partnered to help offer solutions. Simon Redfern, the company’s vice president of corporate affairs told that there is no competition in this. Although some failures had happened regarding paper coffee cups and the plastic usage.

Starbuck only accounts about 1% of the 600 billion paper and plastic coffee cups divided globally every year.

Starbucks has also announced about their new pilot programme, together with coffee farmers in Rwanda, Colombia, and Costa Rica to establish new technology which could log, track and share real, on time, and something happening in the coffee world, information about coffee beans and all. This traceability will automatically improve bean to cup for Starbucks. Starbucks worked with more over than 380,000 farms over the past year.

“For the next two years, we will look to demonstrate how technology and innovative data platforms can give coffee farmers even more financial empowerment, we’ll leverage an open-source approach to share what we learn with the rest of the world,” told Kevin Johnson the company’s chief.
