A new research tells that combining caffeine and cannabis might affect your body about how good the cannabis is taken and processed. Have a cup of coffee before diving deeper, it’s all about science now.

According to The Journal of Internal Medicine, people who consume four to eight cups of coffee are having a decrease in metabolites, found in the endocannabinoid system. Here’s a report from Live Science about the finding reports:

“Endocannabinoids are molecules that stick to cannabinoid receptors, which are found all over the nervous system, and also in the immune and endocrine tissue. Our body is smart. It makes its own endocannabinoids, but it also responds to foreign cannabinoids, like the ones found in the leaves of plants of the Cannabis genus. Coffee subdues the endocannabinoid chemicals that smoking marijuana boosts…”

The bottom line is, coffee might have a different effect than what cannabis does to our body or to out endocannabinoid system. An assistant professor of preventative medicine at Northwestern University, and the one who led the new research, Marilyn Cornelis, concludes:

“‘What we notice here is that the systems that are impacted by coffee and cannabis overlap.’ This could mean that drinking coffee with marijuana in your system could create interacting effects, though the nature of those interactions isn’t clear yet. Generally, the same endocannabinoids that declined with coffee also decrease when the body is under pressure. It’s likely possible that people who consume four to eight cups a day could be stressed, which led to a drop of endocannabinoid levels as some kind of protective measure.”
